Over 30 years of equine experience - owning and caring, training, riding
After 36 years of working as an economist for the Canadian federal government, while training horses on the side, I retired in 2017 to start a horse training business.
I am a mobile trainer with over 30 years of training experience, offering on-site problem-solving for owners and their equines.
I can help you start your horse under saddle or in harness and have worked with all breeds, from draft horses to miniature horses. I can improve dangerous or unwanted behaviour, including biting, kicking, rearing, bucking and bolting. Note that some behaviours may be due to pain, and pain is the first thing I assess in a horse with unwanted behaviour.
Some horses also need to develop confidence, and those with separation anxiety can also exhibit dangerous behaviour when removed from their herd or when left behind. I can help you and your horse build confidence using ground work to teach your horse how to relax and be more aware of its body.
I am a firm believer in the effective use of ground work to teach horses boundaries and to show leadership. Ground work can also be used to teach a horse how to relax and find emotional control. I have worked with owners to help them understand their equines, communicate clearly, and work safely with their horses.
I have developed a solid trailer training method that works to teach horses to consistently load into trailers and have trained over 800 horses and their owners with this method. I created an online trailer training course to pass this method on to horse owners. See the link to subscribe to the course under the News tab.
I have completed hoof trimming and equine nutrition courses and attended training clinics given by Chris Irwin, Josh Lyons and others. I have also learned valuable lessons along my training journey.
I have owned a number of horses of various breeds (and a pony) and have cared for them at my farm. I currently own and ride 5 horses.
